IS&T will perform maintenance on the AFS servers in the athena.mit.edu and net.mit.edu AFS cells. During parts of the maintenance window, AFS clients (including web.mit.edu, www.mit.edu, and scripts.mit.edu) will be unable to access files stored on the AFS servers. IS&T will sunset the Spectrum Protect (TSM) backup service and will no longer accept new backup clients beginning August 1, 2026.
Existing users of the service are being contacted directly with information about timelines and transition planning. IS&T will work with current clients to support migration to replacement backup solutions. Questions may be directed to tsm-systems@mit.edu. Posted on

On Sunday IS&T will be upgrading two AFS servers (castor.mit.edu and grand.mit.edu). All of the data on them is redundant and will be retrievable from other AFS servers, but users may see short timeouts (generally under a minute) during the work.

IS&T will be rebooting the building network aggregation(entry) switch in attempt to clear an error on one of the line-cards. A temporary outage to the network is expected while the switch reboots.
